I try to recommend new releases the week they are released. Some albums slip by me, though, and deserve recognition once I’ve heard them. This is one of those albums.
Typo Magic is the debut album from Golden Gurls, a trio from Balitmore, MD. Most of the songs are 2 or 3 minutes in length. There’s an undeniable ‘90s shoegaze quality to the band’s sound. Take 5 minutes, listen to the first 2 songs, and try not to think about Dinosaur Jr.’s albums from the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. The combination of that caterwauling guitar tone, the melodic, strummed bass, aggressive drums, and the relaxed and buried vocals may sound familiar but still wholly original.
The entire album is streaming at Golden Gurls’ Bandcamp site.
