Like many people, my acquainted with Bill Fay after hearing Wilco’s chilling and apropos version of “Be Not So Fearful” from the documentary film I Am Trying to Break Your Heart. Fay recorded a few albums in the early ‘70s, including one that wasn’t released until 2005, but he was quickly and prematurely dropped by his record label. In 2010, the British songwriter released a double album of demos and unreleased home recordings.
His songs have always had an impressive and almost divine quality. Now, with his first studio album in 40 years, his lyrics are imbued with a learned acumen on these tender songs. And for the fans, like myself, who have Wilco to thank for the introduction to Fay, there are a couple of treats – Jeff Tweedy lends his distinctive drawl to “This World” and Fay covers Wilco’s “Jesus, etc.” accompanied only by his solo piano performance.
