Eric D. Johnson, who has been a touring musician with Califone, The Shins, and Vetiver, records his own music under the name Fruit Bats. Like The Ruminant Band (one of my favorite albums from 2009), this new album is filled out with the addition of his touring Fruit Bats. Tripper adds more keyboards and a more lush and full sound than the previous effort. The acoustic rhythm guitar is no longer the centerpiece of the songs. The tonal shifts are complemented with songs that have a tangible, narrative quality. It is an album that combines catchy pop with a mellow atmosphere.
