This supergroup of indie rock baseball fans is back for their second album. Steve Wynn, Scott McCaughey, Linda Pitmon, and Peter Buck wrote songs about Mark “The Bird” Fidrych, baseball nicknames (especially them 2010 Giants), Pete Rose, and Bill Buckner. They’ve got a few guest appearances on this release, including The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn pleading to “Please Don’t Call Them Twinkies.”
DeVotchKa – 100 Lovers | CD

On 100 Lovers, DeVotchKa conjures a sound that falls somewhere between Arcade Fire and The National. The combination of orchestral, folk, and international tones make the music sounds both tangible and haunting.

Mike Watt has declared this 30-track album his third opera, after Contemplating the Engine Room and The Secondman’s Middle Stand. The short bursts of songs, all essentially 2-minutes or shorter, call back to some of The Minutemen’s best.

Living up to its title, Blessed is ethereal country capped with Williams’ indelible, mature croon. More ballads than rockers, these songs demonstrate how she has become the female counterpoint of the contemporary Dylan.
