Here are The Wheel’s Still In Spin’s suggested new releases for this week.
The Civil Wars – Barton Hollow | CD
Vinyl
MP3
Download “Barton Hollow” (mp3)
The Civil Wars sound like the American response to The Swell Season. Like their international counterparts, Joy Williams and John Paul White have an enchanting connection as they create powerful and atmospheric folk infused music.
The Go! Team – Rolling Blackouts | CD
Vinyl
MP3
Download “T.O.R.N.A.D.O.” (mp3)
The Go! Team is the Captain Caveman of eclectic pop. They seem to effortlessly pull out the perfect tools from absolutely nowhere. There’s no way they should be able to effectively combine all these different styles (hip hop, pop, punk, etc.), but they have made their most accessible album to date.
David Lowery – The Palace Guards | CD
MP3
Download “The Palace Guards” (mp3)
The singer, songwriter, guitarist of Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker has released his first solo album. That voice and keen melodic sense, the same qualities that typify David Lowery’s other projects, are apparent on The Palace Guards. He continues to create anthemic, countrified rock and piquant ballads.
Todd Snider – The Storyteller [Live] | CD
MP3
Todd Snider is one of the most entertaining troubadours around. He’s a great songwriter who releases some pretty damn good albums. But he is best when he performs live. As he describes it, “I make this shit up, I sing it, for anybody who will listen to it. Some of the songs are sad, some of them are funny, some of them are short, some of them will seem like they go on for as many as eighteen minutes. And sometimes I may talk for as many as eighteen minutes in between a particular song unless its ‘Alpha Males Get In Free’ night, and then I just plow through this shit while two or three of you yell stuff at me in between.” Luckily, on this album, he shares some of his greatest stories and finds time to fit in some of his best songs, too, including “America’s Favorite Pastime” and “Conservative Christian, Right-Wing Republican, Straight, White, American Males.”
After the jump, there is also a list of more new releases from this week.
