With the rise of Internet radio, The Wheel’s Still In Spin is introducing a new weekly feature. Every Monday, we list the recent online news articles about the future of Internet radio.
CBS to Run Yahoo’s Internet Radio Service
From Reuters: “Chalk up another Internet radio casualty of significantly increased royalty fees for airing music online. Yahoo Music, once the top music destination on the Web, is handing over the bulk of its Launchcast Internet radio operations to CBS Radio.” “Under a deal closely resembling that between CBS Radio and Launchcast rival AOL Radio, CBS Radio is taking over all advertising-sales operations, licensing and technology decisions for the Launchcast service. That includes replacing the Launchcast desktop music player with a co-branded one provided by CBS.”
A Radio Giant Rides to Yahoo’s Rescue
CNNMoney.com explains some of the financial issues that lead to Yahoo’s decision. The article also explains, “[CBS radio president of digital media, David] Goodman also said CBS has ‘thousand of people who understand how to sell audio’ advertising who will now be pushing Yahoo’s inventory to Madison Avenue. In short, CBS gets a bigger footprint on the Web. And Yahoo will probably do better because it’s effectively outsourcing its radio ad sales to a company with a great deal of experience in the field.”
Pandora Tops iPhone App Store With 2M Users
PCMag.com reports that, “Since its launch earlier this year, the iTunes App Store has boasted all manner of success stories, but none come close to that of Internet radio generator Pandora.” “Pandora is now the most popular iPhone app, having registered 2 million users as of Tuesday morning.”
