This past Tuesday, November 4th was an historic day. While there were a couple of decent albums released this Tuesday, the best new release of the day was provided by the American voters. In addition to The Wheel’s Still In Spin’s weekly suggestions, we begin with a special “new release”:
President-Elect Barack Obama
Download the Victory Speech (mp3)
Mavis Staples – Live: Hope At The Hideout [Live] | CD or MP3
Download “We Shall Not Be Moved” (mp3)
On this live album, Staples sings anthems like “Eyes On The Prize,” “Down In Mississippi,” and “Freedom Highway.” During “We Shall Not Be Moved,” she details a story of Civil Rights defiance from the ‘60s. This is a strong live album from a musical legend. The fact that its release date coincides with the day that Barack Obama is elected President of the United States of America makes its effect even more pungent.
Megapuss – Surfing | CD or Vinyl
Megapuss is a band comprised of Devendra Banhart and Priestbird’s Greg Rogove. Like both members’ previous projects, Megapuss is a blend of folk, psychedelic rock, pop, and soul. These songs are catchy and kitschy.
Travis – Ode To J. Smith | CD or MP3
Download “J. Smith” (mp3)
This Scottish alternative band has released one of the better albums of their career. The songs in this set are more focused on upbeat, electric guitar riffs. The album tastefully combines a multitude of instruments. From a production standpoint, it is one of the best-mixed albums of the year.
After the jump, there is a list of more new releases from this week.
