Once a week The Wheel's Still In Spin highlights a band from the Greater Cincinnati area. Whether you prefer Skyline or Gold Star, you will agree that this band is "Better Than The Chili."

Earlier this week, the Pomegranates released one of the better albums of the year. It had been available from their label’s website since the beginning of April, but it saw wider distribution this past Tuesday, May 13th. Also, they were Spin’s Artist Of The Day yesterday.
The band began playing music together near the end of 2006. Four months into life as a band, they recorded the five songs that would appear on their self released EP, Two Eyes. A week after they released Two Eyes, they were signed to the independent Washington DC label, Lujo Records.
In August of 2007, less than a year after forming the band, Pomegranates recorded their full-length album, Everything Is Alive, in a six-day process. They state in the liner notes that they “didn’t use any pitch correction or metronome, which added a bit to the flavor of the album.” The album has that accessible energy level of a live recording, but the sound is tight and polished. The album melds the accessibility of pop with some of the experimental aspects of indie rock. It’s the best release by a local artist I’ve heard this year.
Below the video to “Whom/Who” is embedded.
Pomegranates will be opening for Joe Lally (of Fugazi) this Saturday, May 17th at Blue Rock Tavern.
Their next local show will be Sunday, June 22nd at Gypsy Hut in Northside.
