Day 3 was the final night of the Midpoint Music Festival. Once again, there were full venues throughout downtown Cincinnati. Tonight I was able to squeeze in seeing and hearing these bands: Breaking Laces, leerone, Otter Petter, Paper Airplane, Ferdinand Fox, Lonesome Tumblers, Church Of The Red Museum, Turnbull AC's, Beau Alquizola Band, Miranda Sound, The Seedy Seeds, Hotpipes, and Stephanie's Id. The following is a list of my favorite performances.
Breaking Laces - This three-piece band from Brooklyn, NY, provided a great set to open the night. Their music is witty, acoustic pop rock. Their show was incredibly fun.
Otter Petter and Lonesome Tumblers - I tried to squeeze in as much music as I could during the night while getting three or fours songs by the bands who appealed to me. Unfortunately, I ended up only catching the last song of the sets by these two bands. Both bands had great sounds and I hope I can check out more of them soon.
Paper Airplace - This Cincinnati band exists somewhere between the sonic palettes of T Rex, The Flaming Lips, and The Beatles. It's accessible indie pop with a tight live show. They even dedicated the song "It's Time To Go" to George W. Bush.
Ferdinand Fox - This Chicago, IL, spent time as street musicians when they weren't playing their set. Dressed in white jumpsuits with the band's logo on the back, the five members would perform songs outside their venue before and after their set. They were an energetic and enjoyable band that sounded like a cross between Faith No More and The Gap Band.
Church Of The Red Museum - It is hard to deny that around the edges this band from Columbus, OH, sounds like Modest Mouse. But with its six members, Church Of The Red Museum offers more diverse instrumentation. With male and female lead vocals, piano, organ, violin, and trumpet added to the drums, bass, and guitar, the band created a sound that was ethereal but rocking.
Turnbull AC's - This band from Cincinnati created a high energy show. They mixed alt country with a strong rock feel. The band provided a great combination of well written songs and strong musicianship.
The Seedy Seeds - This Cincinnati two-piece band is apparently a hard band to describe. While the MPMF website described them as Americana Decemberists, they have also been nominated for two Cincinnati Entertainment Awards for the Album Of The Year, Best New Artist, and Best Experimental/Electronic categories. One thing is for sure. They are an eclectic band that defies genre specifications.
Hotpipes - This four-piece band from Nashville, TN had a diverse sound. The lead singer started by standing on the stage monitors and screaming into the audience. Their first song sounded like a rocked out version of Iron & Wine or a countrified version of Earlimart. The sound soon progressed to a strong indie rock attack.
